#4242: The New York Guitar Festival's First 20 Years

For this New Sounds, listen to music from the New York Guitar Festival, over its first 20 years. There’s plucking, hammer-ons, tapping, sliding, strumming, bending, pickin’, and you name it, from guitar innovators, masters, and heroes. Hear work by steel guitar and dobro player Cindy Cashdollar along with the blues of Charley Patton as performed by string-bender Toshi Reagon. Also, listen to music for modified guitar by instrument builder Dominic Frasca, and for modified “hyperbass” by American bass player Michael Manring.

Plus, listen to music originally meant for the 21-stringed African lute-harp, the kora, as arranged for the six strings of a guitar by South African guitarist Derek Gripper and music by Brian Eno as reimagined by Brooklyn ambient ensemble Itsnotyouitsme, Phish bassist Mike Gordon, and multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell. There's also music by the punk-cumbia trio Savila, recorded in 2018 in the Greene Space. And so much more as we look back at recordings made over the past two decades of the New York Guitar Festival.
