#4236: Music for Percussion
Listen to music for percussion, from the mighty battery of a 16-member percussion orchestra, new music quartets Third Coast Percussion and the L.A. Percussion Quartet, or the skills of one single percussionist.
Listen to a grand-scale work, "Child of the Earth", a symphony for percussion by Thomas Kozumplik (of Clogs), which was commissioned by Jonathan Haas for the NYU Percussion Ensemble. The work involves 16 players who mix marimbas, vibraphones, bells, chimes, piano, xylophone, Thai gongs, timpani, drum kit, more drums, cymbals, gongs, voices, and small percussion.
Then, from the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid, hear music played by the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet. It’s her work, “Fear-Release” which comes together like the formation of a crystalline structure, exacting in its space- involving chimes, bells, crotales, and other metallic instruments. Listen to a work whose title invokes destruction, “Torched and Wrecked” by David Skidmore of Third Coast Percussion from a larger suite of works called “Aliens With Extraordinary Abilities”.
There’s also music from the duo of Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie and the Icelandic musician and artist, Björk, from the first spontaneous experiment they’d ever made together back in 1995, called “Oxygen.” Listen to new work by drummer, percussionist, and composer Eli Keszler from a recent EP, Empire, inspired by "the illusion of order during declines." Plus, hear music by Barcelona-based pianist Francesco Tristano, in collaboration with Japanese tabla-player U-zhaan along with music by the Persian classical percussionists of the Trio Chemirani in collaboration with Afro-Cuban pianist Omar Sosa. And more.
