#4210: Hot Jazz and Blues from Soundcheck Sessions

From live in-studio performances in the Soundcheck Podcast series, listen to funky jazz from Chicago and Brooklyn-based Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Nashville guitarist and poet, Adia Victoria, and dance-party jazz from London’s Ezra Collective.

Hear some of the tight funky brassy jazzy grooves of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, a band of seven brass-playing brothers from the south side of Chicago and Brooklyn. Their music draws from funk, funky jazz, Afrobeat, hip hop, rock, reggae, and R&B, and they play a few tunes and chat about their compositional process (debating and “hypnoticizing”).

Then, listen to the London-based quintet Ezra Collective, whose music is an irresistible blend of groove that includes Afrobeat, hip-hop, jazz, grime, reggae, and tips of their caps to spiritual jazz. They've come from Tomorrow's Warriors, a vibrant community of younger musicians of all kinds of different backgrounds who have been inspired by jazz. Their leader, Femi Koleoso, has some reverence for both Max Roach and Tony Allen. 

Also, hear blues-rooted Southern Gothic pop by Nashville-based singer-songwriter, guitarist, and poet Adia Victoria.
