#4168: New Releases, October 2018
It's the most wonderful time of the month! Listen to the newest and perhaps not-yet-released sounds to have come our way for the month of October. There's music from the latest record by Baba Commandant And The Mandingo Band, who bring the cosmic funk by way of Burkina Faso. Mamadou Sanou, aka Baba Commandant, leads the band with growly vocals and his main instrument is the doso n'goni, the "hunter's harp” or West African Hunting guitar. Then, listen to London-based band Vula Viel, who make what might fall close to Steve Reichian jazz or post-punkish minimalism- all centered around the Ghanaian xylophone, the Gyil.
Sample work by the Estonian duo of looping violinist and vocalist Maarja Nuut and the electronic artist Ruum (born Hendrik Kaljujärv). On their Muunduja, (which translates to “Shifting”), experience music which inhabits an in-between state: “the warping of time’s arrow using sound.” There’s also music by Malian guitarist Sekou Bah, "the monster of Malian rhythm," who has played with Salif Keita, Oumou Sangare, and Fatoumata Diawara. Listen to a song from his new record, Soukabbè Mali, which also includes American drummer Will Cahoun (Living Colour.)
Plus, hear Zen ritualistic groove from Swiss pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch's Ronin, from his recent record, Awase, along with new music by L.A.-based producer, composer, and sound designer Deru. - Caryn Havlik
