Listen to the latest from Montreal-based violinist and composer Jessica Moss (Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra), using a framework of quantum theory. Hear her processed violin layers – chorus, octave, loops – along with her voice, in “Fractals (Truth 4)” the final movement of her four-part “Fractals” opus from her record, Entanglement.
Then, listen to American-Lithuanian singer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Abraham Brody, in music for voice, violin and looping station. Although he’s been living and working in Lithuania immersing himself in the song traditions in Lithuania, this is one of a series of songs in English, with an additional curveball – listen to Brody and the quintet Wooden Elephant performing an arrangement of his song, “Red Sun”.

Listen to one of the Mystery Sonatas – violin pieces from the 1670's by the Bohemian composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber – in which Biber depicts the story of the birth, the crucifixion, and the resurrection of Jesus. Then, listen to Pulitzer Prize-winning David Lang’s reflective response to Biber’s “bizarre and fiery” pieces, also called mystery sonatas, written for the violinist Augustin Hadelich.
There’s also music featuring the violin by Canada’s Oliver Schroer, Estonian violinist Marja Nuut, Czech violinist Iva Bittova, and Swiss violinist Paul Giger. Hear one of the pieces from the late Oliver Schroer’s “Camino” – violin episodes recorded along El Camino de Santiago, the pilgrim route in Spain. Then, there’s trance-inducing music for live-looped voice and violin -recorded in the woods of Talinn, by Estonian violinist Marja Nuut. Hear the spellbinding work of violinist, vocalist and improviser Iva Bittova, along with music by Paul Giger playing in the crypt and upper church of the great French cathedral, Chartres. Plus, listen to music for violin and tape loops in the late American violinist and composer Michael Galasso’s “Scenes.”
