#4157: Music Rooted in the British Isles

New Sounds | Feb 6, 2021

Listen to music that grows out of the folk traditions of the British Isles – Wales, Scotland, England, Ireland, some of it incorporating chamber music, electronics, minimalism, and a bit of non-western traditional music as well.

Hear music by the Martin Hayes Quartet, which interprets traditional Irish music with an interesting twist of Doug Wieselman’s bass clarinet and Liz Knowles’ viola d’amore, in addition to Dennis Cahill’s guitar. There’s also music from British folk singer, Emily Portman, and her mixed ensemble, The Coracle Band, with a beguiling combination of harp, banjo, concertina, musical saw, and strings.

Listen to music, most likely from Scotland folk traditions, interpreted by the Danish String Quartet. There’s also music from the Finnish/Armenian/British band SANS, which features zither-player and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Cronshaw, the great Finnish singer Sanna Kurki-Suonio, multi-instrumental reeds player Ian Blake and Armenian duduk master Tigran Aleksanyan.

Then, from Wales, hear so-called “American Primitive” fingerstyle guitar by Toby Hay, who was in contention for the Welsh Music Prize, and whose instrumental guitar music is enhanced by a small string section on his record, The Gathering. Plus, hear music by English composer Tunde Jegede and music from both Fairport Convention and Sheila Chandra which shares a melody – “Reynardine”.
