#4153: Music from the Black Sea

New Sounds | Aug 27, 2019

Listen to music featuring instruments from Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, including the apricot wood instrument called the duduk as well as the original instrument, the voice. Also, listen to music from artists who come from those places, but also musicians based in Italy, Montreal, New York, and Finland.

Hear music by Swedish–Turkish musician and bar owner Ilhan Ersahin from his most recent release of Istanbul Sessions. It’s instrumental dance music featuring the saxophone without the electronics. There’s also music from the Brooklyn-based Balkan vocal trio called Black Sea Hotel in collaboration with the Silk Road Ensemble on an arrangement of the traditional Macedonian folk song “Sadila Jana.” Plus, hear music involving the duduk from the Finnish/Armenian/British band SANS, along with a work by Italian pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi featuring Armenian duduk master Djivan Gasparyan.

Listen to music by Mercan Dede, a DJ and player of the ney flute, who splits his time between Montreal and Istanbul. Plus, hear music from the all male Rustavi Choir from Georgia, as well as music from the Bulgarian Women’s Choir and their breakthrough record, Le Mystère de Voix Bulgares.
