Hear music from Brazil by Elza Soares, music with Colombian roots by Combo Chimbita, music by Argentinian producer Chancha via Circuito, and Andean music by Chile’s Inti-Illimani.
Listen to music Brazilian legend Elza Soares from her provocative 2018 record, Deus é Mulher or “God is a Woman,” which continues in the vein of “dirty samba” (samba with punk and jazz) innovation. The record also features the percussion group Ilú Obá de Min, the only-female Afro-Brazilian bloco de carnaval (street band for Carnivale), from São Paulo.
Hear music by Argentine producer Chancha via Circuito (the Pig on the Circular Train) from the 2018 record Bienaventuranza, and a tune that features Ecuadorian singer Mateo Kingman. Also, listen to two tunes from Chancha via Circuito's 2011 record, Rio Arriba, which takes South American folklore to the club.
There's music by first-generation New Yorkers from Colombia, Combo Chimbita, who marry Afro-futurism and punk to Latin America and Caribbean styles.
