#4103: With Julianna Barwick & Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek

For this New Sounds, hear music by female voices that go to extremes of western music. Vocalist Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek (formerly of Anonymous 4) of founder the group ModernMedieval together with composer & vocalist Julianna Barwick give a preview of their Ecstatic Music Festival show on Thursday, April 19.

Hear works by David Lang and Hildegard von Bingen performed by ModernMedieval, who are the super-group of Anonymous 4 founder Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek, Martha Cluver from the vocal octet Roomful of Teeth, and Eliza Bagg who is also in Roomful of Teeth. (Eliza Bagg also leads the band Pavo Pavo, and hosts The Glittering Door on New Sounds Radio.) Jacqui explains how this new trio is informed by her work with Anonymous 4, which was not just early music but the group also performed works by living composers.

Then, listen to music made of the many vocal layers of composer, vocalist, and producer Julianna Barwick from her records, Nepenthe, and Will. Plus, Julianna nerds out a bit about writing records in Garage Band and her expansion into the Omnisphere software and MIDI. Julianna Barwick has written a new work for herself and ModernMedieval, which gets its world premiere at the New Sounds Live / Ecstatic Music Festival concert at Merkin Hall on April 19.
