#4099: Music with Low-End Instruments

New Sounds | Oct 2, 2020

Listen to music featuring instruments from the low end, including the bassoon, the tuba, the trombone, and the bass clarinet for this New Sounds show.

Hear works by the composing/performing collective Oracle Hysterical, featuring Brad Balliett on bassoon, and his twin brother Doug Balliett on bass, from a forthcoming record containing songs based on Euripides’ play Hecuba. There’s also music featuring Shara Nova along with the chamber band Clogs, (which also contains bassoon), from their record, ‘The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton.”

Listen to music featuring the trombone from Chicago-based experimental collective Isotope 217 whose members are also part of Chicago Underground Orchestra and the post-rock band Tortoise. They describe themselves as an eclectic avant funk ensemble dedicated to the Phonometric* system of universal thought.” There’s another work by Clogs, this time an instrumental, followed by a work by Clogs bassoonist Rachael Elliott, from her debut solo bassoon album, with a cameo appearance by Clogs.

Hear a tribute to Mulatu Astatke from the intriguing super-quartet Sons of Kemet, who are saxophone/clarinet player Shabaka Hutchings, two drummers, Sebastian Rochford and Tom Skinner, and tuba player Oren Marshall, from their record, Burn. (Also, if you haven’t yet, check out their newest record, Your Queen Is A Reptile. It rules.) Plus, listen to a work featuring contrabass clarinet by John Surman, and more. -Caryn Havlik
