It’s the most wonderful time of the month! Flash back to the classic “New Sounds” theme, or Brian Eno’s song, “Julie With…” just the instrumental opening, which used to open each episode of the show. Then, listen to the duo called Group Listening (clarinetist Stephen Black and pianist Paul Jones) and their arrangement of the Brian Eno tune from a forthcoming record of covers, due out in May. Then, hear music from composer/pianist Jean-Michel Blais from a record whose title, Dans Ma Main, is inspired by a Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau’s poem. “In my hand, the broken end of all paths.” Also, listen to new music by Berlin-based electronic-music duo Mouse on Mars.
Sample music from the Malian duo of Djénéba & Fousco who draw on griot tradition and recruit additional support from cello, guitar, drums and other percussion, and the kora player Ballake Sissoko. There’s also music from the Manchester, UK-based quintet Kabantu who combine South African tradition with Scottish and Irish dance music, touches of Latin rhythms, and the reciting of Indian percussion syllables.
Hear trio music by pianist/composer Rachel Grimes created in collaboration with film director Jeremy Frindel for the documentary “The Doctor From India.” Listen to more piano-based music by Chad Lawson, which is created by adding metal percussive effects, together with loops resulting in a transformative texture. Plus, hear ambient and atmospheric music by guitarist Steve Tibbetts from the forthcoming ECM record, Life Of.
