Efren Lopez is a Valencia-based Spanish guitarist who plays guitar and anything that looks like a guitar: Afghani rabab, Cretan lauto, and European, North African and Central Asian plucked instruments of all kinds. Listen to music by the trio of Spanish multi-instrumentalist Efren Lopez, Cretan bowed lyra player Stelios Petrakis, and Iranian/French master percussionist Bijan Chemirani. Then hear a solo guitar piece from Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug (“on his way into the champions league of contemporary jazz”- Alex Schmitz, Jazz Podium (Germany). and then one with his avant chamber jazz trio, Equilibrium.
Listen to a guitar duo descended from Appalachian mountain folk songs by The Baird Sisters, Meg and Laura, in a style called “American Primitive,” along with similarly fingerpicked music by the guitarist David Shapiro,who performs solo guitar shows as Alexander. Plus, hear music from the gifted English guitarist James Blackshaw and a work from the chamber band Oregon, featuring guitarist Ralph Towner and reed player Paul McCandless.
