#4049: A Musical Tour of Italy
Take a musical tour of Italy for this New Sounds, including music from the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. Hear music from a brand-new record by Albanian cellist and the vocalist from Puglia, Redi Hasa & Maria Mazzotta (a sometime vocalist with Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino.) Also, there’s music by Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino from Southern Italy – in the boot, who sing in both the Greco, or Griko dialect which has Greek words in it, and the Salentino dialect. From a brand new 2017 release, Canzoniere, “songbook,” listen to music that incorporates dance rhythms of South Asia, along with Taranta music. With their tamburelli [frame drums], violins, bouzouki, organetto [button accordion], and bagpipes, CSG makes music which is “at the crossroads of East and West, near both Greece and North Africa.”
Also, listen to music from the Italian group Hobocombo, who bring together both traditional Italian folk songs and arrangements of the music of American iconoclast composer, Moondog. There’s music inspired by Dante’s Divine Trilogy by cellist & composer Giovanni Sollima, along with music from the island of Corsica in a collaboration involving three different artists: Sardinian trumpet player Paolo Fresu, Italian bandoneonist Daniele Di Bonaventura and the Corsican all-male choral group A Filetta. Then, from Sardinia, hear music by composer and saxophonist Enzo Favata.
There’s also music from Naples by Enzo Avitabile together with the band Bottari, which makes use of scythes, barrels, and other farm implements as percussion instruments. Hear music by Sicilian-born progressive rock superstar Franco Battiato, who studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen, and makes music in a minimalist-experimental vein that is somewhere between Brian Eno, Arvo Pärt, and what John Peel dubbed “Krautrock.”
