#4042: From New Sounds Live, A Tribute to Pauline Oliveros
From the New Sounds Live concert series, listen to an augmented version of the Darmstadt Ensemble led by Ben Neill and Zach Layton – featuring a brass ensemble playing Phonemophone Alphabet Horns created by American sculptor Carol Szymanski. The Ensemble performs works in tribute to the late composer, accordionist, sound experimenter, & pioneer Pauline Oliveros, both immersive experiences: “Tuning Meditation” and “Sound Geometries.”
The composer and accordionist Pauline Oliveros was a trailblazer in tape and electronic music in the 1960s. She was a pioneer in alternative tunings and in what she called "Sonic Meditations" in the 1980s. When she died in 2016, she left behind a huge number of works that are all about experiencing sound - in a really deep way. Many of them fill spaces with slowly unfolding electro-acoustic sounds, much like “Tuning Meditation” and ‘"Sound Geometries,” a work specifically written for surround sound. Listen to both of those works, as performed at Brookfield Place in October of 2017 by the Darmstadt Ensemble led by Ben Neill and Zach Layton.
