#4016: More Songs About the Sun

New Sounds | Aug 29, 2018

For this New Sounds, hear more songs about the sun, as something of a toast to the recent eclipse. There are voices singing about the sun in music by the indie-chamber-pop band Clogs, along with music from the late English composer and mystic Sir John Tavener, and his work, “Eternity’s Sunrise, for soprano, hand bells and an ensemble of Baroque instruments. Then, hear John Luther Adams’ "Canticles of the Holy Wind," performed by Philadelphia-based choir The Crossing. Composed for four choirs of eight singers each, this portion of the larger work, “Sky with Four Suns,” evokes celestial movement and slowly fades out of range.

There's instrumental music about the sun by New York-based violinist/composer Caleb Burhans and his work, “Iceman Stole the Sun” featuring Alarm Will Sound. There’s melody-led electronica, in “The Wider Sun,” by Jon Hopkins from his record, “Insides,” which conatins acoustic strings. Then, listen to violinist, composer and producer Emily Wells arrange layers of classical strings backed with beats that wouldn’t be out of place on a hip hop record. Also, listen to the sampled harpsichords, woodwinds, and strings - all blurred and sewn back together with electronic textures by Polish composer Jacaszek. Plus, hear Appalachian psychedelia in solo guitar music by Daniel Bachman, and more.
