#4001: Percussion Music
Listen to percussion music for this New Sounds, which veers away from loud, insistent, clangs and crashes and more towards thoughtful, considered, spatially-aware works using instruments of metal, wood, and stones.
From the record, Beyond, by the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet, hear a work by L.A.-based composer Ellen Reid which comes together in solid order,- like the formation of a crystalline structure, exacting in its space- involving chimes, bells, crotales, and other metallic instruments. The record defies percussive bombast, containing gems of space, timbre, and precision, from commissions by Icelandic composers Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Daniel Bjarnason, together with another L.A.-based composer, Andrew McIntosh, and New Yorker Christopher Cerrone.
Hear percussion music from French-born, Montreal-based composer Olivier Alary along with highly melodic percussion-driven music by the Philadelphia-based instrumental rock trio called Square Peg Round Hole. Then, listen to a portion of “Blue Notes and Other Clashes” by Princeton University-based composer Steve Mackey for the Prism Sax Quartet (also Philadelphia-based) together with the New York-based quartet, So Percussion.
In addition to percussion instruments, listen to music for stones by both Jeff Herriott, and Stephan Micus. From Herriott’s concert work called “The Stone Tapestry,” listen to music from a gaggle of percussionists and one flute, featuring the two musicians of Due East and Third Coast Percussion, where music is made from the natural landscape by using percussion like stone, wood, and bowls of water. Then, from German multi-instrumentalist Stephan Micus, hear music made with four sculpted stones and his voice, from a record called, The Music of Stones, recorded in a church. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
