#3934: Works by Bang On A Can PCF Alumni
Listen to music from composers who have been commissioned by Bang on a Can to write music for the Bang on a Can All-Stars for this New Sounds. There are works for baroque instruments, American folk instruments, classical instruments, but not the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Hear a work by Marc Mellits played by American Baroque, along with a piece for violin and resonator guitar by electro-acoustic experimentalist and installation artist Paula Matthusen. Both composers have previously been commissioned by the People’s Commissioning Fund, Mellits in 2000 (“5 Machines”) and Matthusen in 2013 (“ontology of an echo”.)
Then there’s music from London-born Anna Clyne, and her remarkable multimedia work, "The Violin" (for two violins) featuring violinists Cornelius Dufallo and Amy Kauffmann. Her previous PCF commission was also from 2013, “A Wonderful Day," featuring found sound – the spoken and sung words of Chicago street musician Wooly. Then, hear music by Berlin-based Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who’s perhaps better known nowadays as a composer of award-winning film scores, even though he was commissioned by Bang on a Can in 2013. Sample some of Jóhannsson’s recent film score for the sci-fi mind-bender, “Arrival.” Also, listen to a piece by Nico Muhly for the chamber band eighth blackbird, which incorporates a fragment of a Philip Glass work. Plus, a bit of music by Kate Moore.
