#3900: New Music With Flutes
Hear works for multiple flutes including the first of the “Counterpoint” series of pieces by Steve Reich along with flutes from Bolivia, and traditional flutes of Japan – the shakuhachi and the shinobue. From from the New York-based shakuhachi (bamboo flute) player James Nyoraku Schlefer, listen to a suite from his “Solstice Spirit,” composed for shakuhachi orchestra- 18 shakuhachis of differing lengths. Schlefer multi-tracked all of the separate parts of contrasting microtonal tone clusters along with section of shakuhachi quartet in the studio.
Then listen to music from jazz flutist Herbie Mann, and revisit a 1970's recording, "Gagaku and Beyond." This classic album features a contemporary ensemble of Japanese traditional instruments - shamisen, koto, shakuhachi, and taiko drums - led by flutist Minuro Muraoka, and fuses these together with groove and Mann's "family of Mann" ensemble.
Hear the first of the “counterpoint” series of pieces by Steve Reich, written for flutist Ransom Wilson, called “Vermont Counterpoint.” Usually it’s performed by one flute – here the new music champion, flutist Claire Chase- with ten other flute parts on tape (pre-recorded), playing in counterpoint.
