#3835: With Thomas Bartlett of The Gloaming

New Sounds | Feb 26, 2016

For this New Sounds, The Gloaming’s Thomas Bartlett, a.k.a. Doveman, joins John Schaefer to present selections from the all-star ensemble’s captivating second album, The Gloaming 2.

The Gloaming is the sum of five versatile and talented musicians: gifted Irish fiddler Martin Hayes, Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill, Irish master of the Norwegian hardanger fiddle Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, sean-nós  master singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, and New York pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman).  Martin, Caoimhín, and Dennis have been recognized for extending the Irish and Celtic music traditions, while Iarla has worked with leading Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy and been the voice of the Afro-Celt Soundsystem.

Thomas Bartlett has a resume that includes work with indie-rockers like The National, and Antony & the Johnsons, as well as with the composer Nico Muhly and avant-folk singer Sam Amidon. He also produced The Glomaing's most recent recording, where the overall idea was to harness the magic made by the five musicians in a room, and tap into the joy of being alive. As producer, Bartlett also doesn’t see the borders and rules of the Irish and Celtic traditions. So, the rest of the players keep on bending and extending the Irish and Celtic music traditions to the extent that their experiments yield magic results.

Listen to some of The Gloaming’s new tunes, along with a post-classical gamelan-influenced collaboration featuring Bartlett and Nico Muhly, called Peter Pears.
