A Festival Grows in Brooklyn

Minneapolis has Prince, Asbury Park has Springsteen, Augusta has James Brown. No shortage of famous musicians hold a claim to Manhattan. But what about Brooklyn? The borough has experienced a rapid turn-around as an arts destination in recent years, and particularly for more cutting-edge fare. For some answers on why and how this emergence has happened, we’re joined by Danny Simmons and Brian Tate, organizers of the Brooklyn New Music Festival, which takes place this week. Also on the show: The Beach Boys' album "Smile" is pop music's equivalent of the Holy Grail: a record hailed for decades as a lost masterpiece. Later this month it’s being released for the very first time, and today, WNYC’s David Garland joins us with a sneak preview.
