From Grit to Glitz

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
Having emerged from a child prodigy into a seasoned artist, the 30-year-old Lithuanian violinist Julian Rachlin has mastered the art of the smooth transition. Fifteen years ago, he made headlines by becoming the youngest soloist ever to play with the Vienna Philharmonic. This season he is finally making debuts with several major American orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic next week, under the baton of Lorin Maazel. He joins us today to preview a performance of Penderecki’s brilliant Second Violin Concerto. Also, trumpeter Frank London, funding member of the Klezmatics and leader of his own Klezmer Brass Allstars, stops by to share some of his cross-cultural music, which has one foot firmly in the old Lower East Side and another in the Balkans, the Middle East, and points in between.
