As the 300th anniversary year of St. Petersburg, Russia continues in full gear, we welcome two generations of stars from that city’s musical life. Conductor Valery Gergiev, artistic and general director of the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg, joins us amidst what is a typically frenzied week here in New York: Not only does he open the 2003-04 season of the Metropolitan Opera with Verdi’s La Traviata Monday night, but two nights later, he takes the podium of Carnegie Hall to open the season there with an all-Russian program by the Kirov Orchestra. And that’s just for starters. We also welcome Philippe Quint, an adventuresome young violinist whose career and musical interests straddle the United States and his native Russia. And Joseph V. Mellilo, executive producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music joins us with a preview of the venue’s 2003 Next Wave Festival.
