Shanghai Surprise

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
Among the fastest-growing markets for classical music is China, where long-held restrictions from Mao's Cultural Revolution have been lifted and new economies are flourishing. Today we’re joined by the Shanghai Quartet, which is marking its 20th anniversary this season by performing Beethoven’s complete string quartet cycle in China, where no such project has ever been presented before. Also, Joanna Lee, Gramophone magazine’s Asian correspondent drops by to discuss some of the latest signs of this trend, including the explosive growth of Chinese orchestras, concert halls, and festivals.
