Brian Lehrer's Baseball Challenge: Pick Your All-Time NY All-Star Team

WNYC News | Jul 15, 2013

The Major League Baseball All-Star Game is Tuesday evening at Citi Field in Queens, home of the Mets.

Four New York players are on the rosters - Robinson Cano and Mariano Rivera of the Yankees and David Wright and Matt Harvey of the Mets.

WNYC's Brian Lehrer is a big baseball fan, and though he says the All-Star Game is not as popular as it used to be, he accepted a challenge: Try putting together a line-up of all-time New York all stars.

"A few positions are obvious, like Babe Ruth in right field and Lou Gehrig at first base," Lehrer said. "But beyond that, here are some decisions you might make:

"Pitcher: Sandy Koufax or Tom Seaver?

"Second base: Jackie Robinson or Robinson Cano?

"Catcher: Mike Piazza or Yogi?

"Third base: does A-Rod qualify, or have we asterisked him off the island?

"And the outfield in addition to Ruth: Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Duke Snider? Choose any two.

"And of course I may be leaving people out altogether, so feel free to make up your own roster," he said.
