Middle Class, With Few Pre-K Options

SchoolBook | Dec 16, 2011

What happens when your preschool child is obviously ready for an organized program and you are not one of the families lucky enough to make it into a public school pre-K?

Some families go underground.

That is what happened to Soni Sangha, who writes about her experience in "The Pre-K Underground" in this Sunday's Metropolitan section of The Times. The article is now posted online.

Illegally — and perhaps a bit irrationally — the writer opted for a co-op pre-K for her son. Not once, but twice, she joined a group of parents who shared the costs and the burdens of forming essentially an organized play group, with a full-fledged teacher.
