Shemekia Copeland Sings It How She Sees It

Soundcheck | Oct 15, 2012

Last year, Shemekia Copeland was crowned “Queen of the Blues” by the daughter of the woman who previously held the esteemed title, legendary Chicago blues singer Koko Taylor. Copeland's latest album, 33 1/3, evokes not only the revolutions per minute of LPs, but also her current age, and the record is filled with songs that don't hold back on opinions or emotions. "It's... about telling stories," she told host John Schaefer after performing her song "Lemon Pie." "That's what I'm trying to do, is tell the stories. Tell what's happening now in 2012 and how a woman like me feels about it. I think everybody gets the idea that I'm pretty P.O.ed."

Set list:

  • "Lemon Pie"
  • "Mississippi Mud"
