OLYMPIC CONTENDER Karolina Michalczuk

WNYC News | Jan 23, 2012

KAROLINA MICHALCZUK (Flyweight 112lbs/51kg)
Hometown: Warsaw, Poland
Record: 2012 Olympics Team Poland

Karolina Michalczuk was a gymnast as a kid. But after 4 years, she was told she was too tall to continue. She tried kickboxing instead -- at that point there was no women’s boxing in Poland.

Lidia Fidura is 10 years younger than Michalczuk. When she started boxing, there were lots of girls in the sport. And she says the numbers have only increased since the Olympics announcement.

Michalczuk and Fidura go to school when they’re not boxing, but their training regimen takes up most of their time. Listen to more above.
