Scene Study: Black Metal

For years, the genre known as black metal has lived on the edges of heavy music's underground. With its pummeling drum beats, growled vocals, and history that includes actual murder and mayhem, it seemed destined to remain in the shadows. But lately, a crop of new bands, including Brooklyn-based Liturgy, have shed the violent vision and mythology – and won over many new, mainstream listeners. Pitchfork editor Brandon Stosuy joins us for a look at one of rock’s last outlier genres.
