Discussion on The Whitney Museum with Robert Doty, Stephen Weil and Leon Levine

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

[Marty] Wayne hosts a conversation on Contemporary American Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art with Stephen Weil, business affairs; Leon Levine, public affairs; and Robert Doty, Associate Curator.

The men discuss the history of the Whitney among broader topics like: What is American art? What is good art? What is the function of a museum as an educational space? How should art be appreciated?

Wayne uses a Barnett Newman "zip" painting as a focal point to express his frustrations on the artistic merit of contemporary American work. The guests defend the appreciation of art on an emotional and intellectual level, which they see as non-exclusive and equally important while mentioning educational programs and current exhibitions offered by the Whitney to practice these skills.
