Kenneth Tynan

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

On this episode of International Interview, host Fraz M. Joseph interviews British theater critic Kenneth Tynan. Franz frames several questions around his recent publication "Curtains," a collection of his dramatic criticism.

They discuss Tynan's visits to America and his opinions on American theater. He views American theater as being too commercial and exhibiting a shallow need to be desperately loved by the audience. They discuss his opinions on the work of Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams, among other American playwrights and directors, as well as why plays succeed in one country and not another, particularly "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder. They also discuss the Lincoln Center Repertory Theater and American theater critics.
