Hometown: Brooklyn

The Facts: Van Etten is one of the city's most promising young voices. Hers is a mixture of intentional and incidental beauty, bestowed with the kind of resonance and tone we tend to associate with "good singers," yet soaked in humility. This may be the result of Van Etten's days in choir in suburban New Jersey where she grew up.

The Sound: A mood descendent of Neil Young, a style akin to Cat Power.

Latest Release: Because I Was in Love (2009) on Language of Stone/Drag City

He Said, She Said: "This is a remarkable album, quietly riveting, translucently pure, and infused with eccentric intelligence. Add Sharon Van Etten to the list of women who are often pegged as simply “beautiful voices”, but who are, in fact, much more than that." – Jennifer Kelly, Dusted Magazine

"When twenty-eight-year-old Sharon Van Etten sings, her voice feels like a timeless story you’d read from a musty book, colored yellow with age." – Derek Evers, The Tripwire
