#3013: Middle Eastern ChamberLoungeJazz
For this New Sounds show, we’ll hear some Middle Eastern chamber/lounge/world/jazz. It’s hard to know what to call it, but it’s music with a decided Arabic flavor. Listen to the Canadian trio Cordâme (augmented by percussionists and a guitarist) dance around Ellington and Ravel while incorporating Persian music, Indian music, Armenian and African music.
Also, there’s music by the Lebanese-born New York-based Bassam Saba, a world-renowned nay virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist who also plays oud, violin, buzuq, and saz. We’ll hear from his latest record, “Wonderful Land.” Plus music from Saba’s student, Israeli guitarist and oud player Amos Hoffman. Rounding out the show is something from Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista’s cross-cultural “Banquet of the Spirits” along with something from Anglo-Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas.
