Having arrived here in 2005, Trombonist John Yao is a relative newcomer to the New York jazz scene, but already the young arranger and composer has managed to assemble a gigging big band, no easy task in this day and age.

“Out Of Socket” is a John Yao composition (and arrangement), and it displays a real talent for classic big band writing. The track starts as a very solid (if somewhat unadventurous) swing tune, but at about ten minutes in, a funky 5/4 boogaloo groove takes over and thats when the band really starts the shine.
