New York Public Radio Commemorates Pride with “The Sound of Pride: Stonewall at 50”

(New York, NY -- June 7, 2019) -- This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City’s Greenwich Village, and in recognition of this milestone, the city will be home to the World Pride celebration for the first time.

To commemorate this landmark anniversary, New York Public Radio (WNYC, WQXR, WNYC Studios, Gothamist, and The Greene Space) presents “The Sound of Pride: Stonewall at 50,” an array of special radio, podcast and live event programming that captures the history, force, spirit -- and most importantly, the voices -- of LGBTQ movements over the past five decades.

“The Sound of Pride: Stonewall at 50” includes:

• “The Sound of Pride,” a limited edition podcast series hosted by Kathy Tu and Tobin Low of Nancy, the podcast about queer life and stories. The series features a curated selection of reported stories and personal narratives about LGBTQ life, love, milestones, setbacks, and victories from Nancy and other WNYC Studios shows including Radiolab, The Stakes, Sooo Many White Guys, Death, Sex & Money, and The Takeaway.

• Ongoing coverage from the WNYC Newsroom about the Stonewall Uprising, the history of Pride parades, the state of LGBTQ rights today, and a guide to the celebrations happening throughout New York City this month.

• Three nights of live call-in shows on WNYC, hosted by Kai Wright of The Stakes, about the revolution sparked by the Stonewall Uprising. Listeners are invited to share their thoughts on LGBTQ New York -- then and now -- and what community means as the cultural landscape shifts and the city changes (June 18, 19 and 20).

• WQXR Celebrates Pride (June 11), a special evening hosted by Tobin Low, featuring performances by classical music luminaries including Met Opera star Anthony Roth Costanzo accompanied by pianist David Moody; members of the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus; ChamberQUEER, pianist Sara Davis Buechner; cellist Hannah Collins; tenor Scott Murphree; and a conversation with Steven Blier, pianist and Artistic Director of the New York Festival of Song.

• A special Pride edition of 44 Charlton (June 7), The Greene Space’s monthly variety show, with New York singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Stephin Merritt, comedian Bowen Yang, rapper Nappy Nina, and an appearance by Mike Hot-Pence.

• Gothamist will feature Pride-related art and cultural events throughout June and a special guide to Pride Week, coverage of Stonewall history, an archival photo gallery, and more.
