American composer Tyondai Braxton has been actively involved in music composition and performance since the mid 1990's. As the guitarist, keyboardist and singer of Battles, he received worldwide acclaim for the group's debut album Mirrored (released in 2007 on Warp Records), which, among other honors and awards, was hailed by Time Magazine and Pitchfork Media as one of the 10 best records of the year. The album's single, “Atlas,” reached over two million people on both YouTube and Myspace and over six million on last.fm. The tour following the album’s release brought the band to such venues as The Sydney Opera House in Australia, The Fuji Rock Festival in Northern Japan, and the Cartier Foundation Museum in Paris.
Braxton's music consists most prominently of orchestrated loops, a real-time overlaying of guitar, voice and found objects designed to simulate an ensemble. His most recent recording, Central Market (released in 2009 on Warp Records), showcases his large band and orchestral music and will be performed in the United States in March 2011. His commissions have ranged from multimedia art/music installations (for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council) to compositions for world-renowned ensembles (the Kronos Quartet, Bang On A Can) and contemporary dance troupes (Merce Cunningham protégé Alan Good). He lives in New York City.
