Rebuilding Malaco

Monday, May 02, 2011

In a month known for showers, April this year brought with it another, more frightening, weather condition: tornadoes. More than 400 of them were confirmed last month- and one of them showed no mercy toward a historic recording studio in Jackson, Mississippi. Malaco Records, a soul staple since the late 1960s and the recording home of hits like Jean Knight’s “Mr. Big Stuff” and Dorothy Moore’s “Misty Blue,” was devastated by the storm. We check in with Tommy Couch Jr., son of Malaco Records President Tommy Couch Sr., to hear about the studio’s plans to rebuild and the music that was made in their now-destroyed studio.
