Friday, August 23, 2013

Soundcheck is revisiting some of our favorite segments from the past year. Today, we're presenting "Survivors," featuring veteran musicians who have beaten the odds and carved out a space for themselves after decades in the industry.

In this episode: Dance floor diva Kylie Minogue reflects on 25 years of music and fashion.

Plus: In the late 1980s, Keith Sweat helped pioneer the fusion of hip-hop beats and R&B grooves known as New Jack Swing. Now, he’s giving love advice to fans in a new book and on his radio show.

And: For two decades, Low has created some of the most intense “quiet” indie rock around. We talk with Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, the husband and wife duo behind the Minnesota-based trio, about their 20th anniversary. And, the group plays songs from its new album, The Invisible Way.

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

In this episode: Last week, the news leaked that NBC plans to move The Tonight Show back to New York -- and replace current host Jay Leno with the comedian, actor and musician Jimmy Fallon. We take a look at how this decision could change the sound of late night TV.

Plus: Twenty-five more recordings have been marked for preservation by the Library of Congress. We’ll take a listen to the songs and artists that made this year’s list.

And: Duluth, Minnesota indie trio Low plays songs from their new album, The Invisible Way, live in our studio.

Also: Pop chart columnist Chris Molanphy turns the tables on our occasional series about surprising hits, "That Was a Hit?!?," by giving us a now-ubiquitous pop song that flopped when it was first released.

In Studio: Low

Wednesday, April 06, 2011

Since 1994 the Minnesota band known as Low has become a critical and cult favorite for its moody, downtempo, minimalist songs. That cult of followers includes ex-Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, who recorded two of their songs on his last album. Now, Low is releasing its first new album in 4 years, and the band plays live in our studio.
