I partially agree, and partially disagree. What needs to be doubled is the AUTHORITY and DISCIPLINE that teachers can legally apply in the classroom! The authority and disciplinary capabilities has been STRIPPED from teachers in the last 40 years, and that is the MAJOR reason why so many kids are failing.

It is nonsense to say that class size does not matter. Maybe not in a class of college students, but it very much matter in K-12. The mayor is talking nonsense. Let him try controlling and teaching a class for a week without his bodyguards and the cameras accompanying him.

The value added approach is statistically untenable. Most education researchers agree.

Treat them like the professionals they are and support them with professional development on best practices on a regular basis.
There is no way that even the best teacher in the world can teach effectively to a class of 50 to 60 students. Especially when you consider students from broken or unstable homes.

I would have put 'hold teachers accountable' at #3 or #2 if it was more than just test results. Student evaluations, monitoring class skills, parent evaluation, etc.

SUPPORT! New teachers need support to learn/grow. Experienced teachers need support to continue to be effective. Support, not blame, not vilification.

while I support his reforms, even though they have been only marginally effective. But you can't have great teaching/learning with 60 kids in a class in reality, only in one's theoretical mind.

Tests need to measure what we really value, and they should start to include measures of 21st century skills, such as evaluating and synthesizing information as well as collaborating with others from diverse backgrounds.

Smart, responsive, creative principals! School leadership has such a big impact on what can or can't happen at schools, whether teachers are inspired, whether they feel supported to do their best work, etc.
