#4884, Music for Trombones and Other Brass
Hear a “non-visual film score”, from the album called Ancient City by Paola Prestini and electroacoustic duo Nelson Patton, along with work by trombonist and composer Andy Clausen, solo in the TANK, and with The Westerlies. Also, trombonist, composer, bandleader, and looper Kalia Vandever.
Listen to field recordings, trombone, voice, drums, and electronics from the collaborative album called Ancient City, by composer Paola Prestini, done with the electroacoustic duo Nelson Patton. The composition “tells a non-visual story of sorts - it pays homage to the earth and seasons and responds to the feelings and rhythms of nature,” (Paola Prestini’s Instagram).
Also, there’s new work from New York-based trombonist, composer, producer, and educator, Andy Clausen in The TANK. Hear one work where harmonizers are used, as a tribute to the late trumpeter Jon Hassell, and another work as a tribute to guitarist Bill Frisell. Both were recorded at the TANK Center for Sonic Arts in Colorado, a seven-story converted railroad water silo / performance space where the natural reverberations can last up to 45 seconds. Then, listen as Brooklyn-based trombonist, composer, and bandleader Kalia Vandever weaves beautifully layered musical tapestries using layers of her horn, electronics, and occasional wordless vocals. It’s from her 2023 release, We fell in Turn.
Listen to “Soon it will be Fire,” a reimagining of a song from Sapphie by Richard Youngs, (based in Scotland,) featuring singer Moses Sumney, and arranged by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Plus, hear a little trombone music by Stuart Dempster from a recording made in the Great Abbey of Clement VI in the south of France –part of the Papal Palace in Avignon, where the notes can hang out for nearly 14 seconds, allowing the notes to stack one atop the other. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
