Advocates are seeing more people in pantries after New Yorkers lose SNAP benefits under new work rules

For the next several months, WNYC will be traveling across the five boroughs to hold a series of community forums where we'll hear directly from New Yorkers about how they're navigating the affordability crisis.  

It's called "In Conservation: The Affordability Series." WNYC's Sean Carlson hosted the first installment at BEM Books and More in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn on Tuesday and it focused on the issue of food affordability.

Jilly Stephens is the chief executive officer of City Harvest, New York City’s largest food rescue organization. Greg Silverman is the chief executive officer of West Side Campaign Against Hunger, a food pantry based on the Upper West Side. Marlyn Garcia lives on the Upper West Side and receives SNAP benefits from the West Side Campaign Against Hunger.

WNYC's Sean Carlson spoke with them alongside WNYC Poverty reporter Karen Yi about the challenges food pantries are facing in the current affordability crisis.
