Hear strange strings from a Kronos Quartet tribute record to cosmic jazzer Sun Ra, enhanced chamber-doom by Vancouver-based The Nausea, Welsh duo Peiriant, and Magic Tuber String Band.

Vancouver-based composer and musician Anju Singh (Ahna, Grave Infestation and Ceremonial Bloodbath), recording as The Nausea, combines funeral doom and sound art using violin, viola, cello, and electronics with guest percussion. Hear an excerpt from her Requiem, where she uses the medium as a structured means to process death. There’s also bowed string music, electronically enhanced, and improvised by violinist Richard Carr, violinist/violist Caleb Burhans, and cellist Clarice Jensen, which could be Eno ideas set to strings from their 2024 release, August Light.

Listen to selections from the Kronos Quartet tribute record to Sun Ra, featuring one collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Laraaji on kalimba, and far out things with the composer Nicole Lizée. Then, hear atmospheric music for strings from North Carolina folk-drone duo Magic Tuber String Band and the Welsh experimental duo Peiriant. Plus, hear cello lines, voices, and a Sea Organ in the Croatian coastal city of Zadar in a composition by eco|tonal (Iva Casián-Lakoš and David Crowell). - Caryn Havlik
