New apartments are coming through the new "fast-track" process voters approved last November

New apartments are coming to the city in response to the new “fast-track” review process that voters approved in a ballot referendum last November.

The process cuts the City Council out of the decision-making process and shortens the time frame for local community boards to weigh in. It's an effort to spark housing construction and address a shortage of affordable housing that’s led to rents that are too expensive for low to middle income New Yorkers.

Sideya Sherman, the city's director of the Department of City Planning, talked with WNYC's Sean Carlson more about neighborhoods that are required to “fast-track” housing.
