In Season: fresh, local dairy
WNYC News | Jun 26
June is National Dairy Month. That's when farmers get a surge in dairy production known as the "spring flush." It happens when dairy animals go from eating dry winter feed to fresh pasture grass.Â
Amelia Tarpey, Program and Publicity Manager for GrowNYC Greenmarkets, said you can find some of the best milks, cheeses, yogurts and ice cream at market right now. Standouts include ice cream from Ronnybrook Farm Dairy out of Columbia County and Riverine Ranch which is raising water buffalo in New Jersey for milk and cheeses and other products. Â
Right now, some vendors are selling milk for about $3.50 to $6 a quart.
