Singer Catherine Russell has had a remarkable career. The daughter of Luis Russell, who was Louis Armstrong’s music director, Catherine had music in her DNA. But for many years, she was happy to be backup singer and occasional instrumentalist for David Bowie, and before that Steely Dan. In 2006 she began releasing solo albums, and has showed a particular fondness for vintage blues, early jazz, and R&B. Catherine Russell performs with a collection of musical friends, including Cyndi Lauper, on Oct. 2-3 at Jazz At Lincoln Center.
