Restored and Rehoused Depression-Era Mural, 'Alice of Wonderland Visiting New York'

In the 1930s, the artist Abram Champanier painted Alice of Wonderland Visiting New York, a series of murals that displayed Alice in Wonderland characters throughout the city. The piece was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration, and the panels were displayed in the children’s ward at the Gouverneur Hospital between 1938 and 1940. Now at the Museum of the City of New York, the mural panels are on view together for the first time in almost 50 years. Lilly Tuttle, senior curator of the Collection at Museum of the City of New York, discusses the legacy of this mural series and the exhibit 'Another Wonderland: Abram Champanier’s Alice Mural,' on view through September 27.

At the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, we drop in on a history class called “Dolly Parton’s America.” (We borrowed the name for our series!) Taught by Dr. Lynn Sacco, the class is filled with college students who grew up in rural Appalachia, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college.  Dr Sacco gives the class an assignment: Write an essay that answers the question “What is Dolly Parton’s America?” Lurking just behind that question are thornier ones about Southern shame and identity and hillbillies and football and...well, Dolly.  Is Dolly helping or hurting us?
