New Yorkers will have to prove they're adults to scroll on social media starting January 2027

Social media companies will have to comply with new social media regulations for minors once the SAFE for Kids Act takes effect across New York State at the start of 2027.

The new law requires social media companies to restrict addictive feeds and nighttime notifications for users under the age of 18, unless they get parental consent.  

Holly Grosshans is the senior counsel for tech policy at Common Sense Media, a nonprofit that advocates for children to engage with the digital world responsibly. She joins WNYC's Sean Carlson to talk more about the final rules.
