You might think that a Mongolian band that blends traditional folk instruments with heavy metal would be a very niche affair. But The Hu had a notable crossover hit with their song “Wolf Totem,” which has been viewed some 200 million times on Youtube. The band’s sound is built around the highly amplified sounds of instruments like the topshuur, a kind of lute, and the often startling sound of Mongolian overtone singing. Their lyrics are often drawn from ancient Mongolian poetry, war cries, and terms taken from the time of Genghis Khan. The Mongolian folk-metal band shares the stage with Apocalyptica, a Finnish cello-metal band, on Wednesday night, May 13th, at the Palladium Times Square.
