SHABAKA, Kokoroko, Omar, Lovie at Central Park SummerStage
July 1. 6PM. FREE

First, we got to know Shabaka Hutchings as a sax player, leader of the group Sons of Kemet, and a central player on the London jazz scene. Then he took a few years away from the sax and the high-energy band music he’d been making; and using only the name Shabaka, he reinvented himself as a creator of contemplative music for various wood flutes from around the world. Lately, he’s begun to return to the sax while still pursuing his interest in traditional flutes and producing a record, Of the Earth, entirely on his own (inspired by the late D’Angelo's Brown Sugar.) Shabaka plays a free show tonight, along with the London-based Afro-funk band Kokoroko and others, at Central Park SummerStage.
