Throughout the 90s and 00s, the group Tortoise cut a distinctive swath through the music world, mostly because they refused to play just one type of music. Often considered one of the first so-called “post rock” bands, Tortoise actually played a shapeshifting mix of jazz, Jamaican dub, rock, minimalism, and electronic music. In recent years, with the various band members in great demand for other projects, Tortoise recordings and performances have been pretty sporadic, but they’re playing on June 25 at the Knockdown Center in Queens, joined by New York’s own L’Rain.
