#4898, Process Music

New Sounds | Jun 12

Hear music inspired by processes from American composer Peter Gena; harpist Mary Lattimore with accordionist Walt McClements; and the bespoke generative systems of J.P.A. Falzone.

Hear work by composer James Peter Alfonse Falzone, (whose instrumental training includes pipe organ) which uses bell-like percussion instruments, resonant timbres, and long note-values. Falzone’s piece for orchestra, “Zipf's Law IV”, ostensibly derives from the probability of the frequency of certain events (Britannica), as it follows its own generative system designed by the composer. Also, hear music by American composer, pianist, installation artist, and educator Peter Gena, derived from editing out redundant phrases and sequences from Beethoven’s Op. 54 Sonata, which then turned into Beethoven in Soho (1980), “a quasi-minimalist piece by delaying expectations through repetition” (program notes, New World Records).

Listen to harpist Mary Lattimore in collaboration with accordionist/composer Walt McClements (who tours with Weyes Blood.) It’s music inspired by natural process of changing of seasons featuring joyful harp, accordion, piano, synth, and bell experiments. Then there's music for chamber band by Australian composer Chris Perren derived from the surrounding patterns from a 1950’s championship game of go - the Chinese strategy game of great complexity, where one must surround and capture a greater territory on a playing board than one’s opponent. And more. - Caryn Havlik
